When growing with hydroponics, pH is extremely important for your plants. You should always test the pH of the water being used before adding nutrients to make sure it is at the right level. The same goes for soil or other forms of gardening. We recommend using filtered water to ensure it is clean and no harmful substances are present. For more information on water filtration please click here.
Once nutrients are added to your water system, the pH can easily change again. Testing your pH is easy and can be done with standard pH test strips.
For more information on why the pH is important please visit our pH page. If you realize that your pH is not at the level it should be there are many products available which can help balance your pH.
Another important thing to test for in your water when adding nutrient is E.C. or Electric Conductivity, P.P.M. meaning Parts per Million and T.D.S. which stands for Total Dissolved Salts. These are all terms that one must become accustomed to when entering the world of indoor gardening. For more information on why these are important for your plants read the article EC made easy.
These three things must be tested for using tester pens or wands. When choosing the right tester, be sure to inquire about the warranty. If you can get an all in one tester saves the most but be sure to not substitute quality.
For the best bang for your buck we suggest using the homegrown nutriwand made by Homegrown Hydroponics. It comes with a 3 year warranty and is a very affordable price.
We have also found very good results from Hanna Instruments testers. They make many varieties that can do all in one testing of pH, EC, and TDS and are very high quality makes.
