Is there a hydroponic unit that is all in one? Or do I have to buy everything separate? Could I keep it in my kitchen?

JackYes, the answer for you is the Botanical Touch garden. This unit comes complete with hydroponic garden, 250 W metal halide grow bulb hung on an attractive arbour stand. There is absolutely nothing else to purchase, just add water.
You will be proud to display this garden anywhere in your home!

What do I do with the holes in the garden that I'm not going to be using right away?

JackIf the holes are left open the intense light will cause algae to build up in the reservoir. (a bit of algae on top of the rocks etc. is normal and not a cause for concern) Therefore you should simply fill the mesh baskets with rock and insert in the holes. Leave them empty until you are ready to use.

I would like to buy a small system for around $100. I'm growing small plants and would like to use rockwool.

JackThe Homegrown 4' hydro harvest is $99. CDN and will sustain 8 small plants. It is 6" wide and comes with 'Leca' a clay medium to anchor the roots. This garden comes complete with 2 part nutrient and a pH kit to get you growing right away!

I am interested in trying hydroponic gardening in my basement. Could you advise me on a small start up kit to begin? At this point I have no equipment apart from a bench and an overhead light fixture.

JackTake a look at 'The garden that Jack built'. It comes as a complete kit and would probably be just right for you! To start you might want to get a 400W Metal Halide.
